Micah Richards gives verdict on how Man Utd should solve their midfield dilemma

Micah Richards has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes a chance to build a partnership.

Manchester United have already used several different midfield combinations this season, as Solskjaer looks for his best XI.

Pogba, Fernandes, Nemanja Matic, Fred, Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay are all vying for spots in the middle of the park.

In their most recent win, a 3-1 victory at Everton, the United boss opted to play two holding midfielders in McTominay and Fred, with Fernandes in front.

That worked to perfection at Goodison Park, with the Portuguese star netting twice in the impressive win.

But question marks remain over the long-term viability of that formation, particularly with Pogba left on the bench.

Phil Neville described the decision to not start the Frenchman as “disgraceful”, suggesting only one defensive midfielder needs to play.

And Sky Sports pundit Richards agrees with that sentiment, claiming Pogba and Fernandes should be given an extended run, to see if they can perform together.

Asked if both can play in the same line-up, Richards told BBC Radio Five Live: "I think you can.

“Pogba has not been playing to his best and I've always protected him because of his talent.

"He's not done as well as he should have done, we all know that, but he's been in a team that's been in transition for the last few years, and his performances have not matched what he does with the French side and what he was doing at Juventus.

He added: "Fernandes has not always been playing that great. He played really well last season, he started off OK this season but he gets important goals and assists.

"At the moment Pogba does not get that. I would play them both in centre midfield. I would play just one sitter, McTominay or Fred, and Pogba and Fernandes in front.

"Why not play them for ten or 15 games together? Put them both in and see what happens.”
