Micah Richards and Danny Murphy have inadvertently summed up why Newcastle United were not given a penalty against Leeds United.
The Whites ran out 5-2 winners in an entertaining encounter that saw three late goals dispel the idea that they are suffering from tiredness.
Newcastle went 1-0 up in the game and may have gone ahead again with the scores locked at 1-1 when Liam Cooper tangled with Callum Wilson.
VAR decided against giving the foul, leading to anger from Magpies boss Steve Bruce, who argued the decision was a clear and obvious error.
He said: "I honestly was all for VAR when they brought it in to make sure the clear and obvious mistakes that the referee misses, that's what the VAR is there for.
"If anybody looks at the challenge you understand that it's a clear penalty. We might not have gone on to win the match but certainly when you take the lead in the Premier League then the outcome could be very, very different."
Speaking on Match of the Day on Wednesday evening, Richards said the tackle looked like it should have been a penalty.
He said: "In the modern game, that is a penalty.
"I have to agree with Bruce on that, but from certain angles, he looks like he gets the ball. I’m a defender, so I’ll always say yes to going in from behind, but it does look a foul."
Yet the former Man City defender clearly felt there was an element of doubt to the decision.
It led to Murphy arguing that, if there is a doubt even when watching the replay, then it cannot be considered a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.
He said: "In real-time, it didn’t look like a penalty to me. Once he’s not given it, is it clear and obvious?"
