The Irish Prime Minister has been caught out joking with the European Council president after he said there was a “special place in hell” for people who voted leave without a plan.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Leo Varadkar at the European Council headquarters in Brussels, council president Donald Tusk said: "I've been wondering what that special place in hell looks like, for those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely."

Aftewards, as the pair shook hands, Mr Varadkar joked “they’ll give you terrible trouble for that.” Mr Tusk responded by nodding and laughing.

The moment was picked up on the Prime Minister’s live microphone and on camera.

The joint statements followed talks in Brussels in which they discussed preparations for what Mr Tusk described as the "fiasco" of a no-deal Brexit on March 29.

His comments come after he said the EU was not making "any new offer" to Theresa May on the Brexit deal.

Mr Varadkar said: "The position of the EU27 is clear, as expressed in the documents agreed with the UK Government - that is the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration.

"The EU27 is not making any new offer."
