Miami star basketball recruit Dewan Huell arrested on battery charges

Just months shy of making his highly anticipated debut, Miami Hurricanes freshman basketball player Dewan Huell was arrested on charges of battery Tuesday, according to a report.

Huell is UM's top-rated recruit and expected to compete for immediate playing time.

"I am aware of the reported incident involving Dewan Huell last night, and we are still gathering information," UM athletic director Blake James in a statement released by the school. "I have very high expectations for all of our student-athletes, as I know coach Larranaga does for his team, and any misconduct will be addressed."

Andy Slater of WINZ was the first to report the arrest. According to a police report obtained by Slater, Huell attacked another man who he found with his ex-girlfriend in her dorm on the FIU campus. The report stated Huell, 19, dragged the man out of the room. The altercation left the man with scratches on his neck and chest.

UM coach Jim Larranaga was unavailable for comment. The 6-foot-11 Huell, who played at Miami Norland, was rated the nation's No. 21 recruit by ESPN. He led his high school team to three state championships and was a McDonald's All-American last year.

Huell, who averaged 19.2 points and 9.1 rebounds as a senior, is considered by some scouting services as a player who will compete one season in college before leaping to the NBA.
