Miami sends Reggie McKenzie to Virginia to see prospect Juan Thornhill

Here’s a development to keep an eye on. We’ve known that this Dolphins team will need extra defensive backs to make it tick, but potential top-50 picks invested at the Safety position would be quite the surprise. Miami sent executive Reggie McKenzie to go see Virginia safety Juan Thornhill, who is an ascending name in the 2019 NFL Draft process.

Miami currently picks 13th and 48th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, meaning they’ll be on the fringe of drafting Virginia’s Thornhill if they desired to in the second round.

What does this move mean for Reshad Jones? Is there writing on the wall here? Possibly, but also know that Thornhill spent the majority of his college career playing cornerback, so he has some positional versatility that can bring something unique to the secondary.

Miami’s success on defense will be predicated by their defensive backfield’s depth. These same coaches thrived with depth in the secondary in New England. And seeing as how this staff is ready to pull several pages out of the Patriots’ playbook, expect them to follow through with their vision of bulking up the secondary.
