Miami reportedly interested in pass rusher Nick Perry

The Miami Dolphins’ pass rush problems aren’t going away any time soon. The team’s current projected starters at defensive end? Jonathan Woodard and Charles Harris. The two have combined for four career sacks — meaning the Dolphins are dangerously thin in outside pass rush. Considering this team is hoping to compete — just with a different philosophy than the one they’ve implemented in years past — they may want to consider making some aggressive moves starting tomorrow.

Or — in the case of one player the team is reportedly interested in — the team could make a move today. Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald has reported that the Dolphins are interested in the services of former Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Perry. Perry — a former 1st-round selection — was released by the Packers back in March, meaning he would not count against the team’s 2020 compensatory picks.

There’s some modest upside to targeting Perry in free agency. The team will know him well thanks to the presence of defensive coordinator Patrick Graham on the staff — who worked with Perry in 2018. The former USC product enjoyed a career year in 2016, logging 11 sacks — nearly three times his prior career high. A modest 7 sack season followed in 2017 before Perry succumbed to injuries for much of 2018 and missed nearly half the season.

While Miami’s free agent plans are largely on hold, there’s nothing holding the team back from targeting Perry if the price is right.
