Miami releases linebacker James Burgess

The Miami Dolphins have released linebacker James Burgess, the second time they’ve done so. The move comes on the heels of Miami’s latest roster addition, signing defensive lineman Adolphus Washington yesterday in an effort to gain more depth along the defensive line.

Burgess, who had initially signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2016 before being released during final roster cuts in September, will now look for another opportunity to play in 2019. The former Louisville linebacker has bounced around quite a bit. He’s been on rosters in Miami (twice), Cleveland, San Diego (2016), Baltimore and Jacksonville.

Burgess had spent the final weeks of the 2018 regular season on the Dolphins’ practice squad before signing a futures contract on January 1st of this year.

But the numbers game caught up to Burgess, particularly in a now-crowded group of linebackers. With Kiko Alonso, Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker all returning after being starters in 2018 and the team drafting Andrew Van Ginkel and re-signing Mike Hull, it was difficult to see a pathway to Burgess making the team in 2019.
