May 17--The Miami Marlins fired Manager Mike Redmond on Sunday, the latest tumult in the mercurial ownership of Jeffrey Loria.
The Marlins said they would announce a new manager on Monday. That manager will be their seventh since 2009. In that time, they have had no winning seasons and opened one ballpark, with taxpayer funding obtained after the Marlins misrepresented their financial situation.
The Marlins, who came within one out of getting no-hit Sunday by Shelby Miller of the St. Louis Cardinals, have lost 10 of their past 14 games to fall into fourth place in the National League East.
When the Marlins lost 11 of their first 14 games to start the season, the Miami Herald reported that Loria was considering whether to fire Redmond.
The Marlins last winter signed outfielder Mike Stanton to the largest contract in sports history, although he can opt out of the $325-million deal after the 2020 season. If he does, the Marlins would be responsible for $107 million.
The Marlins also bulked up their roster last winter by acquiring second baseman Dee Gordon, who leads the major leagues with a .420 batting average, infielders Mike Morse and Martin Prado, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and pitchers Dan Haren and Mat Latos.
