MIAMI _ Miami Northwestern High School football coach Max Edwards has been suspended indefinitely while the school's administration undergoes an investigation into alleged unauthorized football training during the coronavirus pandemic.
Northwestern athletic director Andre Williams confirmed to the Miami Herald on Saturday that there is an investigation but said could not comment further and that all information would be relayed through the Miami-Dade County Public Schools communications department.
MDCPS spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego said in a statement that the school launched the investigation "as soon as it learned about this unauthorized athletic activity,"
"Further action may be taken against others who may have been involved in this unsanctioned event," Gonzalez-Diego said. "The school is in the process of communicating with parents of students who may have participated."
The Greater Miami Athletic Conference suspended athletic events on March 13 when the county closed schools. The Florida High School Athletic Association took a step further on March 18, nine days before spring football practices were set to begin, when it put a stop to all high school athletic events in the state.
Edwards, who took over as the Northwestern head football coach before the 2015 season, has led the Bulls to a 51-16 record over the past five seasons. Northwestern has won state championships each of the past three seasons, doing so in Class 6A for the 2017 and 2018 seasons and in Class 5A in 2019.
Edwards also previously served as an assistant coach for the school from 1998-2004.
