The Miami Dolphins’ crowded running back room suddenly got a little less crowded. The Miami Dolphins announced this afternoon that they have waived running back De’Lance Turner. Turner, who was a 2018 undrafted free agent out of Alcorn State, originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 after rushing for 2,121 yards throughout his collegiate career.
Miami claimed Turner off the waiver wire upon his release from Baltimore in the 2019 season, but was only able to command four carries throughout eight games on Miami’s roster.
The decision to part ways with Turner isn’t one that will provide any clarity on Miami’s workload splits in the backfield as a result of his limited role in Miami’s 2019 backfield. But it is one less contender to make the final roster. The Dolphins acted swiftly this offseason to introduce fresh faces into their running back room, signing RB Jordan Howard in free agency and trading a 5th-round draft selection to the San Francisco 49ers for Matt Breida. Those new additions, along with fullback Chandler Cox, 2019 rookies Patrick Laird and Myles Gaskin plus Kalen Ballage and maybe 2020 7th-round pick Malcolm Perry give Miami plenty of contenders for just a few spots on the active roster.
We may not know who the finalists are to make the roster (although we should expect to see Howard, Breida and Cox survive final cuts), but we now know Turner won’t be providing an upset for the ages.
