Miami Dolphins sign safety Doug Middleton

The Miami Dolphins have targeted a defensive back to help step in and fill the void left by the departure of Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins are signing former New York Jets safety Doug Middleton to step into Miami’s secondary.

Middleton is a product of Appalachian State University — he finished his college playing career in the fall of 2015 before entering the NFL Draft process for the 2016 NFL Draft. Middleton has spent the last three years as a member of the Jets organization, logging four starts in 11 games played over that timespan.

The Jets waived Middleton earlier this month before the fourth year safety found opportunity in South Florida.

These are the kinds of players that the Dolphins can find appeal with for the rest of the season — players who otherwise wouldn’t have an opportunity to try to collect positive film of themselves in hopes of keeping their pro careers alive. And perhaps one or two of them will play well enough to earn a long-term opportunity with the Dolphins.
