Miami Dolphins sign offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb

With the departure of former Miami Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil just a week before the start of the 2019 NFL season, the Dolphins must now face a pivot at the left tackle position — a daunting proposition, to say the least.

Miami’s options?

They’ve acquired OT Julien Davenport as a return in the deal for Tunsil and kicking Jesse Davis over from the right tackle position had also been discussed. But now the Dolphins have a third option — free agent signee J’Marcus Webb.

The Dolphins signed Webb yesterday after the designation of Andrew Van Ginkel on the team’s injured reserve list opened up a spot on Miami’s 53-man roster. Webb already had 65 NFL starts under his belt, most recently starting one game for the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. Originally a late round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 2010, Webb has bounced around the league — the Dolphins will be his 6th NFL franchise.

But Miami is the first one that Webb will have family ties to — he’s the younger cousin of perhaps the greatest Miami Dolphin left tackle of all time, Richmond Webb — who played the blindside in South Florida for 11 of his 13 NFL seasons.

Expecting Webb to come in as a free agent and start with just two days notice isn’t realistic. But if Julien Davenport — who has a week’s notice to learn a new playbook — flops, the Dolphins may test Webb in the coming weeks to see if he’s capably of bringing more stability to the field.
