Miami Dolphins sign cornerback David Rivers

The Miami Dolphins continue to churn the bottom of the roster as they prime themselves to step onto the practice field and kick off their 2019 training camp campaign. Just this week, the Dolphins have swapped out defensive back Jamar Summers for Monday’s signee — cornerback Tyler Patmon. And yesterday brought another new name to the roster, cornerback David Rivers. The Dolphins cut interior offensive lineman Ryan Anderson to make room for Rivers.

Rivers was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization for 2018 and the tail end of 2017, dressing for three games for the Bucs over that time span. Before that, Rivers was an undrafted free agent who initially signed with the Green Bay Packers in the spring of 2017.

The Youngstown State product checks in at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds and will join the rest of Miami’s extensive defensive back room in hopes of providing services that tempt Miami to retain him.

The key for any player in the final 10 spots or so on an active roster is to bring value in multiple areas — can you cover kicks on special teams? Can you rush off the edge on the field goal team? Are you a consistent tackler in space to play punt team?

These are the avenues that Rivers can exploit if he hopes to find a spot on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster this September.
