Miami Dolphins name 2021 team captains

By Kyle Crabbs

One of the last mysteries of the Miami Dolphins’ 2021 regular season has been revealed. The Dolphins were not among the list of NFL teams that made their 2021 season captains known over the course of the last few weeks, but that has come to a close. Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins have revealed their 2021 team captains:

  • OT Jesse Davis
  • WR Mack Hollins
  • LB Elandon Roberts
  • DB Jason McCourty
  • DB Clayton Fejedelem

There was some level of surprise to the players named captains for the Dolphins — as many fans expected that honor or distinction to go to second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Furthermore, young linebacker Jerome Baker felt like another potential selection for the role of defensive captain. But neither player made the 2021 version of the team captains; which were reportedly voted on by the players themselves.

Is there cause for concern? Not necessarily. Tagovailoa has clearly put his best foot forward in the offseason to take control of his wide receivers and take initiative to be the best version of himself that he can be. That should, for a second-year player, be enough.

But of course there will be comparisons — and with 2021 rookie quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson being named captains for their respective teams, some fans will be skeptical of Tagovailoa’s status with the team as a non-captain. Like everything else with Tagovailoa, his play will be the ultimate variable. If he plays well, no one is going to care that he wasn’t named a captain for 2021.
