The Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff overhaul this offseason has provided fans with an unexpected twist to a critical series of months for the team. With the Dolphins looking to stabilize their rebuild and roll momentum into the 2020 season, Miami wasn’t supposed to see such significant changes to the coaching staff. But yet Miami has changed both coordinators and critical position coaches in the secondary and on the offensive line.
One of the last hurdles of the overhaul? The defensive backs coach. And Miami now has their answer — the Dolphins are set to hire Gerald Alexander of Cal to serve as their new defensive backs coach in Miami.
Alexander’s Cal secondary produced several prominent pro prospects, including a potential Miami Dolphins draft prospect, safety Ashtyn Davis. Alexander will help fill the void of coach Josh Boyer, who is stepping into Miami’s vacant defensive coordinator position after the departure of Patrick Graham. Alexander played for several seasons in the NFL, including a stop with the Miami Dolphins in 2011. Over the course of Alexander’s NFL career, he logged 121 tackles and 4 interceptions between five teams and five seasons.
The Dolphins, with a stable assistant staff, will now look to pivot and formalize their new methodology for player development.
Whether or not the coaching hires end up being successful changes for the Dolphins or not is yet to be determined. But Flores has earned the benefit of the doubt based on the coaching performance of 2019 and his hires are designed to help provide solidarity for Miami’s coaching staff in 2020.
