MIAMI _ The drive-in movie theater at Hard Rock Stadium will make its debut on Friday, June 19, with the timely Juneteenth screening of Ava DuVernay's critically lauded 2014 civil-rights drama "Selma."
The film will be shown on four large video boards inside the stadium for an audience in cars parked on the field _ home to the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes _ as well as on a large screen outside for fans set up on the Fountain Plaza. The film will begin at 7:15 p.m. in both venues.
"Selma" is the first of several features scheduled to hit screens at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend, including "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" and Super Bowl VII, which completed the Dolphins' 1972 Perfect Season.
Tickets for the Drive-Up Theater, which can accommodate up to 230 cars, will cost $39 per vehicle (add $5 to pick tickets up at Will Call). There you can watch the movie from your car or in a designated "tailgate space" directly outside your vehicle, allowing a 6-foot distance from others.
At the Open Air Theater on the south side of the stadium, reserved seats are arranged across the plaza to allow for social distancing and sold in groups of two, four and six for $12, $17 and $19 per person. Restaurant-style dining and concessions will be available for purchase.
Luxury-box seating, a "living room" arrangement of a sofa, two loungers and two armchairs under a canopy, with waitstaff service, costs $28 per person.
Tickets can be purchased at HardRockStadium.com/Theater. All proceeds will benefit the Miami Dolphins Foundation Food Relief Program.
"Selma" examines a tumultuous three-month period in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s courageous campaign for civil rights, highlighted by the historic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., which led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Directed by DuVernay, it features David Oyelowo as King, joined by Carmen Ejogo, Oprah Winfrey and Common.
"'Selma' carries viewers along on a tide of breathtaking events so assuredly that they never drown in the details or the despair, but instead are left buoyed," wrote Washington Post reviewer Ann Hornaday.
The rest of the schedule for screenings inside the stadium includes Super Bowl VII, June 20; "Jurassic Park," June 25; "Knives Out," June 26; Super Bowl VIII, June 27. All screenings are at 7:15, and gates open at 6 p.m.
The schedule for the outdoor theater includes "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" on Saturday, June 20; "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World," Sunday, June 21; "Men in Black," June 25; "Yesterday," June 26; "Transformers: The Last Knight," June 27. "Despicable Me 3," June 28. All screenings are at 7:15, and gates open at 6 p.m.
In announcing the two theater venues, Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium Vice Chairman and CEO Tom Garfinkel said the team was responding to a need for entertainment spaces that allow audiences to spread out.
"We've spent several weeks planning this to be able to provide people with a safe option to go out and enjoy movies, classic Dolphins content, concerts, and celebrate 2020 graduates," Garfinkel said in a press statement.
"It's a fundamental human need to physically experience and celebrate events and experiences together, and we're trying to provide options for everyone, where they can be safely socially distant and socially present at the same time," he said.
