Miami Dolphins awarded cornerback Ryan Lewis off waivers

The Miami Dolphins have been awarded defensive back Ryan Lewis off of the NFL’s waiver wire — the corresponding roster move to cutting defensive back Johnson Bademosi late on Monday afternoon. The addition of Lewis is something of a surprise, as the Dolphins also have cornerback Cordrea Tankersley on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Monday was the first day Tankersley was eligible to return to the Dolphins’ active roster.

But instead, Miami is adding Lewis, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent back in 2017 out of the University of Arizona. Lewis had spent the last two weeks on the roster with the Philadelphia Eagles, who are a team that have their own set of problems in the secondary. If Lewis wasn’t able to help the Eagles address their own issues on the back end, it is unlikely we’ll see Lewis step into a prominent role with the Dolphins over the coming weeks to help solidify what has been a leaky pass defense thus far in 2019.

Lewis has some established familiarity with this coaching staff — he spent portions of the 2017 and 2018 season as a member of the New England Patriots, where he undoubtedly left his mark of now-Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. Lewis also brings value in his experience with the Buffalo Bills program, with whom he started three games in 2018.

The Dolphins are set to visit Orchard Park and play the 4-1 Bills this weekend.
