With the start of training camp a month away, Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores continues to round out his overhauled coaching staff.
The Dolphins have hired Steve Ferentz _ son of longtime Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz _ as a coaching assistant and former NFL running back Kolby Smith as offensive quality control coach, according to ESPN.
Smith was a fifth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007, rushing for 540 yards and three touchdowns on 162 carries in 27 games (nine starts). The former Louisville standout also spent time with the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars, but didn't play in any games.
Smith, who lasted just three seasons with the Chiefs, backed up Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson in Kansas City.
Smith began his coaching career in 2012 as the strength and conditioning coach at Arkansas. He then was running backs coach at Western Kentucky (2013-14), Louisville (2015-18) and Rutgers (2019).
Ferentz, an offensive lineman at Iowa from 2013-16, spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Central Michigan.
Ferentz has ties to Flores as his father, Kirk, was offensive line coach on Bill Belichick's Cleveland Browns staff from 1993-95 and his brother, Brian, was Belichick's tight ends coach with the New England Patriots from 2008-11.
Flores has added several coaches to his staff since the season ended, including Anthony Campanile (linebackers), Austin Clark (outside linebackers), Curt Kuntz (defensive backs), Chan Gailey (offensive coordinator), Robby Brown (quarterbacks), Steve Marshall (offensive line), Gerald Alexander (defensive backs) and Lemuel Jeanpierre (assistant offensive line).
