Miami dismisses receiver Sam Bruce after 'multiple violations of team rules'

The Hurricanes career of highly prized recruit Sam Bruce has ended before the receiver ever played a down for Miami.

The school announced on Monday morning that the former standout at St. Thomas Aquinas High School had been dismissed from the football team after "multiple violations of team rules and a failure on his part to meet the clear expectations established to be a part of the Miami football program," according to a statement issued by the school.

"We wish Sam well with his future academic and football endeavors," the statement continued.

Bruce was expected to redshirt this season after suffering a serious non-football injury last month. A source told the Sun Sentinel at the time the receiver broke his leg.

That injury played a role in Bruce's dismissal, with a source saying the receiver has missed scheduled treatment sessions. Bruce has also been late for study hall, compounding some of his disciplinary issues.

Those issues began earlier this year when Bruce was suspended for the first three games of the season. While the school said only then that Bruce was suspended for violating an undisclosed team rule, the receiver was forced to leave St. Thomas in February after a photo surfaced of him allegedly holding a gun.

No charges were ever filed in the incident, but Bruce withdrew from St. Thomas and finished his senior year at Westlake Prep before enrolling at Miami.

Bruce was rated a four-star prospect coming out of high school and was an Under-Armour All-American. He had more than 1,300 career receiving and 21 touchdowns in high school and helped guide St. Thomas to a second-straight Class 7A state championship last year.
