MIA would rather risk deportation from America than rush her wedding, she said in a recent interview. "I actually want a nice wedding," she explained. "I'm not going to blow that."
The London-born singer has been based in New York City for a couple of years, but she continues to struggle with US authorities over visa issues. Although MIA is engaged to Benjamin Bronfman, the son of millionaire Warner Music CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr, and gave birth to their son, Ikhyd, at a Los Angeles hospital last year, officials apparently remain wary of MIA's politically provocative lyrics and her father's alleged links to the Tamil Tigers.
Certainly MIA's songs have touched on themes of violence, uprising and governments' totalitarian tendencies. But she insists her father's ties to terrorism have been misreported and overstated. "He negotiated peace processes, brought in the new army, and when he goes to Sri Lanka, the government gives him security against the Tigers," she said.
Now, some who are close to MIA are urging /\/\ /\ Y /\'s titular auteur to go for a "quickie" wedding, ending her green card woes. "That's what they want me to do," she explained. "But I'm not going to lose my integrity for that shit ... If they're gonna kick me out, it's going to be a fight. [And] it's an important fight to have."
