MGU senate urges govt. to withdraw order on pension

A meeting of the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) senate here on Saturday urged the government to withdraw the order that directed that pension benefits to teachers and other staff be paid from the university's own funds.

An emergency resolution moved by senate member P.R. Biju pointed out that relying on own funds for providing pension benefits could lead to a drastic rise in fee structure. J. Lekha, representative of university employees, seconded the resolution.

Misinfo campaign

The meeting expressed concerns over the alleged misinformation campaign against the university, which has been making significant strides in the field of academic research. It also demanded action against colleges that failed to comply with the university’s instructions on the conduct of college union elections.

The senate approved the annual report for the previous year and the annual accounts and audited report for the year 2019-20, besides the financial estimates for the current year.

The meeting witnessed chaotic scenes with the senate members owing allegiance to the United Democratic Front staging a walkout citing lapses in addressing the delay in issuing grade cards and certificates to students. Raising the issue, they pointed out that 6,785 applications were pending despite being applied through the fast-track window.

Vice Chancellor Sabu Thomas presided over the meeting.
