MGM+ Orders Limited Series Adaptation Of 'Earth Abides' Novel

George R. Stewart's 'Earth Abides' novel adapted into limited series by MGM+.

MGM+ has greenlit a limited series adaptation of George R. Stewart's sci-fi novel 'Earth Abides,' with actor Alexander Ludwig confirmed to lead the cast. The streaming service has commissioned six episodes for the series, with Ludwig taking on the role of Ish. Production is scheduled to commence in Vancouver in April, aiming for a late 2024 premiere.

The official synopsis for the series outlines a post-apocalyptic world where a deadly plague devastates humanity, leaving only a handful of survivors to navigate the crumbling remnants of civilization. Ish, portrayed by Ludwig, is depicted as a young geologist who emerges from a coma to a desolate world devoid of life, except for scattered individuals. His journey unfolds as he grapples with the distinction between mere survival and finding purpose and connection in a world on the brink of collapse.

The adaptation is being spearheaded by Todd Komarnicki, who will also serve as the showrunner and executive producer. The writing team includes Karen Janszen, Tony Spiridakis, Evan Hart, and Kyle Stephen. Michael Phillips, Juliana Maio, and Kearie Peak are onboard as executive producers. The series will be directed by Bronwen Hughes, Rachel Leiterman, and Stephen Campanelli across its six episodes.

MGM+ Studios is behind the production of 'Earth Abides,' a novel originally published by Harper Voyager, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The project aims to reintroduce Stewart's classic work to both existing fans and a new audience, emphasizing themes of humanity, hope, and compassion that remain as pertinent today as when the book was first released nearly a century ago.

Lead actor Alexander Ludwig, known for his roles in 'Vikings' and 'Heels,' expressed excitement about the project, while Komarnicki highlighted the enduring relevance of the story's themes in today's world. The series is set to explore profound messages of unity, compassion, and forgiveness amidst a backdrop of societal upheaval and uncertainty.

'Earth Abides' promises to deliver a thought-provoking and timely narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences, offering a fresh perspective on survival, connection, and the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
