MG ZS EV review – Brand go on a charge with electric SUV

THE MG ZS EV may be one of the newest electric cars on the block but it is already proving a hit.

Since the ZS EV was launched to the media in July, it has become a sales sensation, with MG selling 2000 in the first 60 days of order books opening. And bosses of the iconic British brand are so pleased, they are extending their generous grant offers for the next 1000 UK private buyers.

These deals make the ZS EV a truly affordable family-friendly electric car – bringing zero-emissions motoring within reach of those on a budget.

Under the scheme, with the MG grant of £3500 for the range-topping ZS EV Exclusive matching the government’s own £3500 plug-in car grant, customers benefit from an outstanding overall price from just £23,495.

Meanwhile, ZS EV Excite buyers benefit from a new £3000 MG grant that, when paired with the government grant, results in an on-the-road tag from just £21,995.

MG Motor UK sales boss Daniel Gregorious said: “Since the official launch of the ZS EV in July, MG dealerships across the country have reported unprecedented demand from customers eager to get behind the wheel.

“We have listened to all of the positive feedback and are delighted to offer this fully electric family SUV to the next 1000 retail buyers from just £21,995. Our mission at MG is to make hi-tech, zero-emissions cars available to all – and we are well on our way.”

The manufacturer claims that, with a WLTP-accredited range of 163 miles (231 when city driving), a hi-tech driver assistance suite, room for five and a full-sized boot, the ZS EV is a real-world electric car for everyday life.

Other benefits are MG’s seven-year/80,000-mile warranty that includes the battery and the fact that it can be quickly recharged to 80 per cent power capacity within 40 minutes. Owners can also plug in at home on a standard 7kW unit and enjoy a full charge in six and a half hours.

The water-cooled 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack underneath the car feeds a front-mounted electric motor that generates 105kW or 143PS of power and 353Nm of instant torque.

That’s good enough to deliver a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 87mph – so its more than capable of coping with motorway cruising.

As well as ensuring there’s no compromise on cabin or storage space, the position of the battery pack also results in a low centre of gravity, making the ZS EV agile and dynamic through corners.

Three driving modes and levels of regenerative braking can be tailored to suit the driver’s preference, while adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and autonomous emergency braking are standard on all models.

The Excite has 17in alloys, LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, air con and an eight-inch infotainment screen with sat nav, smartphone connectivity and DAB radio.

Move up to Exclusive and you get a panoramic sunroof, faux leather upholstery, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and rear-cross traffic alert. And the whole thing is in a smart compact SUV bodyshell sporting the famous MG octagonal logo.
