Mexico warning to British holidaymakers after tourists shot and killed

Holidaymakers have been warned about certain areas in Mexico as two tourists were recently shot dead.

Those who are going to the country for their holiday have been cautioned that drug-related violence has led to shootouts in multiple tourist hotspots.

A shootout occurred in the Mexican resort of Playa del Carmen last Monday, leaving three tourists injured, reports Birmingham Live. This follows a previous incident in Tulum earlier this year in which two tourists were shot dead, leading to the UK Government issuing official guidance.

They have highlighted the increased police presence and have asked tourists to remain aware of local advice. While tourists are not targeted in violence, there is a risk of them being affected so tourists should be vigilant and keep up to date with guidance from local authorities and tour operators.

The guidance from he Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reads: “Two foreign tourists were killed in Tulum, more tourists were injured during a shoot out in Puerto Morelos, and most recently there was a shooting in the Centre of Playa del Carmen, injuring three.”

The guidance adds: “Crime and violence are serious problems in Mexico and the security situation can pose a risk for foreigners. Many Mexican and foreign businesses choose to hire private security.

“You should research your destination thoroughly and only travel during daylight hours when possible. Monitor local media and inform trusted contacts of your travel plans."

Most visitors to Mexico are unaffected by crime thanks to how removed it is from touristy destinations. Robberies and pickpocketing (especially on public transport) are the main threat in tourist hotspots.
