Mexico vs Korea Republic FIFA World Cup 2026: Lineup, team news and other details

Mexico and South Korea meet in a crucial Group A clash at the FIFA World Cup, with both sides aiming to build on winning starts and move closer to the knockout stage. While bigger names such as Argentina, Portugal, England, and Brazil have dominated the headlines, this contest has the potential to be one of the most significant matches of the group stage.

Having secured victories in their opening fixtures, both teams know that another win would put them in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 16. The result could also play a decisive role in determining the Group A table-toppers.

The match promises an intriguing tactical battle between two contrasting styles of play. Mexico are expected to rely on their trademark possession-based approach, technical quality, and fluid attacking football. South Korea, meanwhile, will look to exploit their pace, high pressing, and quick counter-attacks to trouble the Mexican defence.

The fixture also carries regional importance. Mexico have consistently been among CONCACAF's strongest World Cup sides, while South Korea remain one of Asia's most successful and reliable performers on football's biggest stage. A victory would further strengthen either nation's reputation on the global stage.

The atmosphere is expected to be electric, with passionate Mexican supporters set to create their trademark carnival-like environment, matched by the vocal backing of South Korea's travelling fans.

The game could also produce one of the tournament's breakout stars. Every World Cup offers emerging players the opportunity to make a name for themselves, and a standout performance in such an important fixture could become a defining moment in a player's career.

Fans can watch the match live on Zee5 and the United 8 Sports channel in multiple regional languages.

Mexico vs South Korea team news

Mexico have received a timely boost with winger Julian Quinones recovering in time for the match and expected to return to the starting lineup. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez is set to spearhead the attack once again, with Roberto Alvarado providing support from the flanks. Teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora, who impressed in the opening win over South Africa, is also likely to feature.

However, Mexico will be without centre-back Cesar Montes, who is suspended after receiving a red card in the previous match. Head coach Javier Aguirre is expected to reshuffle his defence by deploying Edson Alvarez in a deeper role.

South Korea, meanwhile, head into the fixture with a fully fit squad and no suspension concerns. Forward Oh Hyeon-gyu will be pushing for a place in the starting XI after scoring the winner against Czechia, while captain Son Heung-min and playmaker Lee Kang-in are expected to be central to the team's fast-paced counter-attacking approach.
