Mexican actor Stephanie Sigman has been named as the third, and most likely final, Bond girl in the forthcoming 007 movie, Spectre.
The actor, who according to IMDb is 27 or 28, will play a woman named Estrella in the 24th official James Bond movie. Daniel Craig plays the suave British spy for the fourth time, with Sam Mendes returning to direct after the $1.1bn (£730m) success of 2012’s Skyfall.
“We are pleased to announce that Stephanie Sigman has joined the cast of Spectre as Estrella,” said studios Sony and MGM in a statement on the official James Bond Facebook page. “The Mexican actress was the lead in the Academy awards-nominated Miss Bala (2011) and also starred in Norway’s submission for best film at this year’s Oscars, Pioneer (2013). Her recent TV appearances include The Bridge (2013) and Narcos (2015).”
Sigman’s fellow Bond girls for Spectre are Léa Seydoux as Dr Madeleine Swann and Monica Bellucci as a character named Lucia Sciarra – though both women have suggested the term is old-fashioned. French actor Seydoux, 29, said last month that she would not be playing a “stereotyped Bond girl”, adding: “You can’t be like, ‘Oh, James.’ You have to find something else.” Italy’s Bellucci, 50, revealed she asked Mendes why he had approached her for the role, telling the Oscar-winning film-maker: “I’m not a girl, I’m a woman, I’m a mature woman. Do I have to replace Judi Dench?”
James Bond movies typically feature three female actors who are romanced by 007, with at least one killed off during the events of the film. As the lesser-known of the three stars, speculation has already begun that Sigman will get the sacrificial-lamb role.
According to a previously released synopsis, the 24th official 007 movie kicks off as a cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre. The film also stars double Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz as likely villain Franz Oberhauser and Dave Bautista as henchman Mr Hinx. Ralph Fiennes plays the new M, with Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw returning as Moneypenny and Q.
