Up to 13 people are feared dead after a private jet travelling from Las Vegas crashed in Mexico, according to reports.

Officials in the north of the country launched a search and rescue mission after the aircraft disappeared from radar.

The remains of the private executive plane that disappeared en route to Monterrey in northern Mexico have since been found, a state government official later said.

A Mexican transport ministry spokesman had said it was not yet clear if any of the passengers survived.

But according to multiple reports in Mexican media, 14 people were feared dead in the crash.

The jet left Las Vegas Sunday afternoon and had been expected on Sunday evening in Monterrey.

Local media reported that some passengers were returning from a weekend trip that included seeing the Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight in Las Vegas.

Media had reported first that 14 people were feared dead but the suspected death toll was later revised to 13.

Flight controllers lost contact with the plane over the northern state of Coahuila.
