Mexico Makes Decision on Coach Diego Cocca After 3–0 Loss to U.S.

With a stretch of mediocrity in international play in the rearview mirror, Mexico is opting to make a change.

El Tri has fired coach Diego Cocca, the Mexican federation announced Monday morning—less than 24 hours after Mexico beat Panama 1–0 to finish third in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Mexico is 3-1-3 in its last seven matches, including draws with Jamaica on March 26 and Cameroon on June 10. On Thursday, the United States beat El Tri 3–0 in the Nations League semifinals in Las Vegas; the game was halted early due to homophobic chanting by Mexico's fans.

Cocca was appointed to his position on Feb. 10 after leaving Tigres UANL in Liga MX. Jaime Lozano, the coach of Mexico's under-23 national team from 2018 to' 21, was named interim coach.

Mexico is set to open Gold Cup play under Lozano on Sunday against Honduras in Houston, seeking its first trophy since winning the tournament in 2019.
