Guadalajara hail: Mexico's freak summer hailstorm leaves streets covered in ice

A freak summer hailstorm dumped a thick blanket of ice upon the streets of a city in western Mexico.

Roads and cars were buried deep in the bizarre phenomenon after a downpour in Guadalajara.

The city had previously basked in 30C heat before the unusual blast of ice descended.

Ice rested up to 1.5m thick in some areas, leaving vehicles buried up to their windows.

State governor Enrique Alfaro said he had never witnessed scenes like it before.

He wrote on Twitter: "I was in the place to assess the situation and witnessed scenes I had never seen: hail more than a meter high, and then we wonder if climate change exists."

Images showed pedestrians struggling to cross the thick sheet of ice, while roads were completely blocked off due to the masses of hail.

Authorities have been working on a mass clean up operation.

Hundreds of homes have reportedly been damaged by the unusual weather.

There were also reports of flooding and fallen trees, though there have been no reports of deaths or injuries due to the storm.
