Mexico City sets rules allowing Uber, other ride-share apps

MEXICO CITY (AP) " Mexico City has published new regulations that will allow Uber and other smartphone-based ride-sharing apps to operate over the objections of taxi drivers.

Under the rules, 1.5 percent of each fare will go into a "Taxi, Mobility and Pedestrian Fund," which will be used to improve taxi and app-based services.

In addition, drivers participating in Uber and similar services must register with the city's transportation secretary. Registered drivers will have to submit their vehicles to annual inspections.

Drivers also will not be allowed to accept cash payments or set up the equivalent of taxi stands. The drivers' vehicles must be kept at their homes.

In a statement, Uber commended the regulations issued Wednesday and said Mexico City was the largest in the world to take such a step.
