Mexican ‘taqueria and mezcaleria’ Madre is heading to Kampus

Madre, the ‘taqueria and mezcaleria’ that has been a hit in Liverpool, is heading for the new Kampus development. The restaurant, inspired by the food culture of Mexico City, will open in the spring, offering tacos, small plates, ceviche, tequila and mezcal.

The first Madre was opened in Liverpool’s Albert Dock in 2019, a collaboration between the team behind Breddos Tacos in London, and the Belzan restaurant in Liverpool. There’s also a Madre concession to be found at Escape To Freight Island, but this will be the first proper restaurant space in the city.

Chris Edwards, co-founder of Madre, said: “Madre is perfect for a party city like Manchester. Taquerias can be pretty raucous, social spaces but at the same time have a family feel, where people come together to share amazing food.

“We’ll be bringing that vibe to Kampus, with iconic favourites alongside a drinks menu stacked with margaritas, natural wine and local beer. Madre de-mystifies traditional Mexican food, serving up new plates made with top quality local produce and a love for authentic flavours.

“We knew we had to be part of Kampus, we love the heritage building and we’ll be in top company with the other independents signed up.”

The new Madre restaurant will take up a space in the Minshull House warehouse space, alongside a host of new operators in the £250 million Kampus development, opposite Canal Street.

Also set to move in are the Cloudwater brewery, which will be opening a beer hall, and Pollen, which will be establishing a bakery and restaurant, with Nell’s New York Pizza opening its first standalone spot at Kampus in November last year.

The development has 500 apartments to rent, featuring facilities including gyms and yoga studios, a private cinema and outdoor terrace spaces.
