A woman from Mexico was killed in a crash Sunday in northwest suburban Elgin.

Josefina Martinez De Torres, 65, was the passenger in a 2001 Kia at 9:37 a.m. when the driver tried to make a left turn from Villa Street to Varsity Drive, according to Elgin police and the Kane County coroner’s office.

During the turn, the Kia hit a westbound 2008 Chevrolet Malibu on Villa, police said.

Torres, who lived in Uriangato, Mexico, and the 75-year-old woman driving the Kia had to be extricated from the car after the crash, authorities said. Torres was airlifted to Saint Joseph Hospital Elgin, where she was pronounced dead.

The preliminary findings of an autopsy indicated she died of multiple injuries consistent with the crash, the coroner’s office said. Toxicology testing is pending.

Both drivers were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, police said. The Kia’s driver was in serious condition, while the 22-year-old woman driving the Malibu had injuries that were not life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Elgin police Traffic Unit at 847-289-2916 or text a tip to 847411 with “ElginPD” at the beginning of the message.
