Mexican President Sheinbaum Touts U.S. Trade Deal Extension: 'Keeping a Cool Head Worked'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated on Thursday Donald Trump's extension of the deadline for the countries to reach a trade deal, claiming that "keeping a cool head worked."

Addressing the agreement at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum reiterated that all products under the T-MEC umbrella will continue under the same conditions, but those outside of it will pay a 25% tariff.

"We stay as we are. It's 90 days to keep talking, building a longer agreement. Why is this deal important? Firstly, tariffs don't increase. Secondly, the T-MEC stays as it is. It's very important to remember that 25% tariffs are for products not included in the T-MEC. They stay for the auto industry but there is a discount for parts made in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, and the tariffs stay the same for steel and aluminum. Thirdly, it maintains permanent dialogue with his team," Sheinbaum added.

The president went on to claim that Mexico has "the best deal possible" considering "the new world order," even "compared to other nations." "Investing in Mexico is still the best option. Keeping a cool head worked," she added.

Trump made the announcement earlier on Thursday, saying that his conversation with Sheinbaum was "very successful in that, more and more, we are getting to know and understand each other."

"The complexities of a Deal with Mexico are somewhat different than other Nations because of both the problems, and assets, of the Border. We have agreed to extend, for a 90 Day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time," Trump added.
