Mexican musical icon José José dies at 71 after battle with pancreatic cancer

Mexican musician José José has died aged 71.

Survived by his wife Sara Salazar, and his children Sarita Sosa, José Joel and Marisol, the singer had been hospitalised many times in recent years because of pancreatic cancer.

José - birth name José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz - was beloved as a musical icon in his native Mexico.

He even earned the moniker "El Príncipe de la canción" - "The Prince of Song."

His long career in the spotlight kicked off after his 1970 performance of "El Triste", and he was renowned for his hits such as "La Nave del Olvido" and "40 y 20."

He became renowned for his tearful ballads about love and heartbreak.

The Mexican Ministry of Culture confirmed José's passing in a tweet: "From the Ministry of Culture we are sorry for the passing of José Rómulo Sosa, better known as José José of the Prince of Song.

"Since the beginning of his career, the singer of El Triste became one of the most beloved voices in Mexico. Rest in peace."

Fans have also been taking to social media to wish José's family well and to mourn the loss of such a cultural icon.

Fellow stars also haven't been shy about their feelings.

Gloria Estefan, another Latin music sensation, wrote on Instagram : "He wrung out our hearts with his unmistakable voice and left an indelible mark on music for all time...Rest in peace, José José, thank you for the beautiful songs and your musical legacy that will live forever!"

José announced he had been diagnosed with cancer back in 2017, and tweeted in June this year to thank fans for their well-wishing messages.

The Mexico City-native struggled with substance abuse, and faced illnesses including Lyme disease and face paralysis that led to the loss of his voice.
