Teuchitlán Mayor José Ascención Murguía Santiago was arrested following an investigation into a Jalisco Cartel training camp, a federal source told AFP on Saturday.

The camp was located at Rancho Izaguirre in western Mexico. The cartel allegedly forced recruitments and anyone who disobeyed its leadership was subject to violence or death.

In March, Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's Attorney General, confirmed that human bones were discovered at the ranch.

"As of right now, there are human remains, although they have not been technically defined," Manero told reporters on March 19.

While local organizers have dubbed the ranch an "extermination camp," with "clandestine crematoriums," Mexican Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch claimed there was "no evidence" it was an extermination camp.

Santiago was arrested on Saturday, according to federal arrest records. About 12 others have been arrested in connection with the camp, including a police chief and two police officers from a nearby town.
