Mexican group linked with Newcastle United confirm they came 'close' to buying an unnamed European side

The chairman of Orlegi Sports Alejandro Irarragorri has confirmed that his company were 'close' to buying an unnamed European side before completing a deal for Mexican team Atlas FC.

Reports in Mexico have claimed that club is Newcastle United, with local sources saying Orlegi had discussed a move with Mike Ashley's representatives. ChronicleLive has not been able to independently verify that at this point but it's understood that interest does still remain in Newcastle.

Irarragorri made the claim during a press conference as he faced the media for the first time since buying Atlas.

When asked about the purchase for Atlas he confirmed: "We were very close to closing a deal in Europe.

And he continued: "Some time ago we took the decision to start to be a strategy group for teams, we believe we have the sufficient expertise and the strategic knowledge to be able to transform and value specific teams with specific characteristics."

He added that following a conversation with Atlas' previous owner Ricardo Salinas, the move to complete the deal of the Mexican side took precedent.

Orlegi wasted little time in restructuring the club as Mexican legend Rafa Marquez left his role as director.

Irrarragorri gave further insight into the approach of the company when it comes to running a football club.

Atlas have battled relegation and Irrarragorri - while promising a long-term plan - admitted there was 'no quick-fix.'

"Those stories of the rich guy buying a team and pouring money in are over, we have to be clear (that's not we'll do). Atlas have great potential, we have to build it up and develop it."
