Mexican federal forces continue ramping up pressure on the Sinaloa Cartel. This week, Security Minister Omar García Harfuch confirmed that a multi-agency operation resulted in the seizure of more than 500 kilograms and 130 liters of methamphetamine, along with thousands of fentanyl pills recovered at multiple sites in the state of Sinaloa.

In a post on X, García Harfuch said the seizure and the dismantling of a clandestine lab marked a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the northwest region of the country. Despite the scale of the seizure and destruction of illegal materials, authorities reported no arrests.

Officials estimated the value of the confiscated drugs at more than $3 million, not including the cost of dismantled laboratories, seized vehicles, and tactical equipment.

The Mexican government has increased efforts to target drug cartels following threats and sanctions from the Trump administration. In response, President Claudia Sheinbaum launched a dedicated task force in February known as Operation Northern Border. Since its creation, officials say the operation has disrupted trafficking networks across the country.

According to Mexico's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, since the operation began on Feb. 5, authorities have arrested 8,206 people and seized 6,400 firearms, more than 1.1 million rounds of ammunition, nearly 30,000 magazines, more than 105,000 kilograms of various drugs, including 483 kilograms of fentanyl, along with 5,235 vehicles and 993 properties.

The launch of Operation Northern Border was also intended to counter the growing flow of synthetic drugs, which in recent years has positioned Mexico as a major global hub for their production and export.

In its 2025 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, the U.S. Department of State noted that nearly all fentanyl seized in the United States originates from labs operated by criminal groups such as the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The report also warned that Mexico remains a key transit country for precursor chemicals arriving from Asia. Once processed in clandestine laboratories, the drugs are trafficked north through established smuggling corridors across the U.S.-Mexico border.

U.S. officials said Mexico has legal controls on eight key precursor chemicals and maintains watchlists for dozens more, but enforcement remains inconsistent. Weak port oversight, widespread corruption, and cartel intimidation continue to undermine regulatory efforts.

Methamphetamine remains one of the most commonly trafficked synthetic drugs into the United States. According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the amount of methamphetamine seized during fiscal year 2024 along the southern border was nearly four times higher than that of the next most frequently confiscated drug.
