Mexer 'interests' Rangers as Steven Gerrard eyes defender who stunned Paris Saint-Germain

Rangers are holding talks to sign Rennes defender Mexer - according to a report.

French media claim Steven Gerrard was spotted at a restaurant in the French city on Thursday afternoon as he pursues the 30-year-old Mozambique international.

Mexer, who scored as Rennes stunned Paris Saint-Germain in the French Cup Final in April, is out of contract at the end of this season.

L'Equipe report Rangers are just one of several clubs interested in snapping up the centre-back as he looks set to become a free agent.

Rennes haven't given up hope of Mexer signing a contract extension but as yet no deal has been struck between player and club.

He was at the centre of last month's huge upset as Rennes, 11th in Ligue 1, shocked Kylian Mbappe and Co in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Stade de France.

Scott Arfield 'wanted' by Crystal Palace as Rangers star eyed in £3m transfer

Mexer, whose full name is Edson Andre Sitoe, rose highest to glance home a front-post header that hauled the underdogs level having trailed 2-0.

The stopper has 46 international caps and has also turned out for Nacional in Portugal, having previously spent time at Sporting Lisbon without making a first-team appearance.

The club have already made moves in the transfer market ahead of next season. They have signed Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones on pre-contracts, as well as tying up Steven Davis on a permanent one-year deal.
