Mets-Yankees Subway Series opener postponed due to rain

NEW YORK — It’s every New Yorker’s least favorite phrase: the subway is delayed.

The first game of the Mets-Yankees Subway Series, supposed to have been played on Friday, was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 2:05 p.m. Tickets for Friday night’s game will get fans into the first game of the doubleheader, but not the second one, which is slated for its original 7:05 start time.

Gates will open for the first game at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The tickets to the postponed game can also exchange them for tickets to a similar 2021 regular season game at Yankee Stadium (subject to availability).

The Mets will push their original Friday starter back a day, meaning Taijuan Walker will take the ball on Saturday. Marcus Stroman has the first game of Sunday’s twin billing, followed by Tylor Megill. The Yankees will slide Jordan Montgomery’s start to Saturday and roll with Gerrit Cole in the first of the twin bill on Sunday. Their starter for the evening game is yet to be determined.

This is the eighth weather-related postponement of the Mets’ season. On top of their opening series with the Nationals being postponed due to COVID-19, plus the April 11 game against the Marlins that was suspended after nine pitches, the Mets have played the most unique schedule of any major league team. They are 7-4 in doubleheader games.

This is just the third rain out for the Yankees, but second in two nights, as the clouds opened over the Big Apple to greet July. As such, the Yankees have only played one doubleheader so far, while the Mets have seven under their belt with more to come in August and September. The Yankees are 1-1 in doubleheader games after splitting a two-gamer with the Blue Jays on May 27.

Should the weather cooperate, fans now have to squeeze two Subway Series games around their Fourth of July plans. There’s nothing more American than baseball and disappointment.
