Mets pitcher Matt Harvey probably won't go anywhere _ or so says Sandy Alderson.
Even though the Mets have talked about trading the starter, who has drawn interest from at least three teams, the general manager told reporters Tuesday that the club is inclined to keep him.
"The most important thing I am weighing are the opinions of Mickey Callaway and Dave Eiland and they don't want to lose him," Alderson said of his manager pitching coach. "Everything else today is moot."
Callaway had previously discussed helping the struggling right-hander "right the ship."
When pressed as to whether that meant Harvey would not be traded, Alderson would not go that far.
"No one is untouchable," Alderson said. "That's cliche, but it covers me and it's true."
At least one team that has inquired about Harvey said that what the Mets are asking for in return is "very high."
Harvey was able to bounce back from 2013 Tommy John surgery, but he lost his command after undergoing surgery in July 2016 for thoracic outlet syndrome. After an early humiliating team suspension, when he failed to show up at the ballpark, Harvey's 2017 season only got worse. He tried to pitch through a weak shoulder, ended up missing significant time and finishing the season with a very humbling 5-7 record and 6.70 ERA.
Among the teams the Mets had spoken to were the Rangers and Orioles, but Harvey is at his lowest value now after two bad years. He hits free agency in the fall of 2018.
