Mets to designate Matt Harvey for assignment

The Dark Knight's days in New York are over.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Friday afternoon that struggling starter-turned-reliever Matt Harvey was asked to accept a minor-league assignment.

According to Alderson, Harvey did not agree to do it and will be designated for assignment Saturday.

"It's the end of an era," Alderson said at Citi Field, prior to the Mets' game against the Rockies.

The Mets met with Harvey at 3:15 p.m. Friday and told him he could have time to think things over and talk to his agent. But Harvey declined to take that time.

"We felt it was worth trying," Alderson said in offering Harvey the minor-league assignment. The general manager said he thought a change of scenery would help, and Harvey could regain his form.

In addressing the situation, Mets manager Mickey Callaway said, "We feel like we failed Matt Harvey."
