Noah Syndergaard was going to throw batting practice on Wednesday. And then he wasn't. But the Mets said it wasn't a setback.
"We decided we're going to err on the side of precaution and give him some extra time," manager Terry Collins said before the Mets hosted the Diamondbacks. "I think we were kind of pushing it, maybe a little fast, wanting to get him back and so we're just going to delay it a day or so."
Syndergaard has been out since April 30 with a torn lat muscle. Throwing batting practice can be the final step before a minor league rehab assignment. It was with Matt Harvey, who is trying to come back from a stress injury in his right shoulder.
Collins said there was nothing new wrong with Syndergaard.
"We talked about it today," Collins said. "We got a lot of people together _ including the trainers and stuff _ and they just said they'd like to take an extra day with him. So whether it's (Thursday) or the next day, I think you'll see it soon that he'll throw to some hitters."
