Mets' Syndergaard gets second opinion on right index finger

ATLANTA _ Mets righty Noah Syndergaard received a second opinion Tuesday on his strained right index finger, according to Mets general manager Sandy Alderson.

The team is expecting results Wednesday.

"Nothing else has happened," Alderson said. "We want to make sure the next step he takes and we take is the right one. This type of injury is a little bit unusual. It happens to pitchers. Typically it happens on their middle finger and not the index finger. Lots of different things that are sort of case of first impression here. Why we want to be careful.

"We want to make sure he's not out any longer than he needs to be."

Syndergaard is currently on the disabled list due to the strain, and did not return as planned this past Sunday due to discomfort and swelling.

He is expected to need at least one rehab start before returning, and Seth Lugo will start again in his place Friday against Arizona. Jason Vargas starts Saturday.

The team continues to debate whether it's better to use Lugo as a starter or have him available as a reliever to pitch multiple times per week.
