NEW YORK _ The Mets are planning to start Noah Syndergaard on Friday against the Nationals provided he emerges fine from his scheduled bullpen Wednesday.
Syndergaard last started May 25 due to a right index finger strain, and has missed more time than anticipated. He made one rehab start Sunday with Class A Brooklyn.
Fellow sidelined starter Jason Vargas threw six innings in his first rehab start Monday with Brooklyn, but the Mets have not yet determined his next step.
"Still trying to determine how he came out of his outing yesterday. He actually threw pretty good," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said before the Mets faced the Phillies at Citi Field. "One of the things we're concerned about is he only got to throw 60 pitches and we'd like to get him built up a little more. We're going to talk to him today and try to figure out of if he needs rehab outing or if he's able to pitch for us."
