NEW YORK _ Mets starter Matt Harvey has been placed on the disabled list with discomfort in his right shoulder and will be examined Thursday by Dr. Robert Thompson in St. Louis, the team announced.
Harvey is 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA this season in 17 starts but had not mentioned any possible physical issues plaguing him this season. He had passed a blood clot during spring training.
The team usually sends its pitchers to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan when there is discomfort or fatigue, but Thompson specializes in vascular surgery. Thompson previously performed a surgery on ex-Met Dillon Gee in 2012 to repair a damaged artery.
The team has recalled right-hander Seth Lugo from Triple-A Las Vegas, and now needs a spot starter Saturday against the Washington Nationals.
