Mets making changes when it comes to handling injuries

NEW YORK _ After all of the Mets' injuries that quickly piled up, general manager Sandy Alderson said the team has made some changes to the way it handles those issues.

The Mets have dealt with a litany of ailments since the start of the season, notably to Yoenis Cespedes and Noah Syndergaard.

The way the Mets handled those injuries was called into question.

Some adjustments have already been made, while others are still being evaluated.

"I wouldn't say that we've reached any significant conclusions but we have changed some of our practices," Alderson said. "For example, I meet with the training staff daily which I've not always done in the past but do it now to provide context for the decisions that we have to make from day to day based on information that not only arises that day but may have sort of been gestating over a period of days."

The Mets have also lost Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis d'Arnaud to injuries.

Alderson said all are making progress, but he wouldn't approximate when they come off the disabled list.

Matz threw three innings for Class A St. Lucie on Thursday, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Lugo also pitched, throwing 32/3 scoreless innings.

D'Arnaud also appeared in the game, going 2 for 4 with two singles. He caught seven innings.

So the Mets at this point are hoping to limit their injuries going forward.

"I think we actually have made some practical changes and whether that's the extent of the change that we see, time will tell," Alderson said.
