Mets game vs. Pirates postponed, doubleheader No. 10 scheduled for Saturday

NEW YORK — The Mets’ wacky season overflowing with postponements continued Thursday.

As Tropical Storm Elsa ravaged the Northeast, the Mets had little choice but to postpone their series opener against the Pirates at Citi Field. It will be made up as part of a single-admission, seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday at 4:10 p.m.

The home team announced the decision an hour before the scheduled 7:10 p.m. first pitch — amidst intermittent heavy rain, thunder and lightning.

Thursday was the Mets’ 13th postponed game of the season and Saturday will be their 10th doubleheader.

Due to previous rainouts, the Mets are due to play a minimum of 13 seven-inning doubleheaders this season, which will shave off 52 innings from their 162-game schedule, or roughly six games. When all is said and done, in terms of innings played this season, the Mets will have competed in the equivalent of 156 games. And that number will only shrink if more doubleheaders are added to their schedule.

Taijuan Walker (7-3, 2.44 ERA) was Thursday’s scheduled starter for the opener against the Bucs. The Mets have not announced whether his outing will be pushed back one day, but it is likely he will take the hill on Friday. That would push Marcus Stroman’s (6-6, 2.60 ERA) start to Saturday in the twin bill.
