The Mets do not have any confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus for now.
Donovan Mitchell Sr., the Mets' director of player relations and community engagement and father of the Utah Jazz's Donovan Mitchell Jr. _ who tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday _ does not have the virus.
After Mitchell Jr. was diagnosed with the virus, Mitchell Sr. was advised to be tested "as a precautionary measure," according to a statement the Mets released Thursday.
The elder Donovan regularly works with players in the Mets clubhouse as part of his role with the team. Donovan Sr. had watched his son play the Knicks in Madison Square Garden on March 4. When the Mets learned of the younger Donovan's diagnosis, Mitchell Sr. was asked to stay away from the team's spring training facility in Port St. Lucie.
Mitchell Jr. is one of two players in the NBA who have tested positive for the virus. The other is Rudy Gobert.
Gobert, the first to test positive in the league for the virus, is largely the reason the NBA shuttered and MLB and various other leagues followed suit.
MLB has cancelled the remainder of spring training and delayed the start of the regular season by at least two weeks.
Players on all teams have been told to go home, though some around the league have chosen to remain at their spring training facility for informal workouts.
