WASHINGTON _ All systems are still go for David Wright to start at third base for the Mets on Saturday _ and the captain might make a cameo appearance as a pinch hitter before that.
Manager Mickey Callaway said on Sunday that he is considering using Wright off the bench in one of the four games leading up to Saturday's farewell.
"I wouldn't mind getting him in there and getting him a pinch-hit at-bat when it makes sense in the Braves series," Callaway said.
The NL East champion Braves visit Citi Field for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Marlins will be the Mets' final opponent of the season beginning Friday.
At his goodbye news conference on Sept. 13, Wright expressed concern about appearing in a game against the Braves because Atlanta was fighting for the division. But with the Braves having clinched on Saturday, Callaway said that won't be a factor.
"I think all along I would have really sought out a spot for him to get one AB in before he starts on that Saturday," Callaway said.
Wright, who has been with the team through this final road trip, has been fielding ground balls at third base and taking batting practice in the cage. Wright declined to speak about his upcoming return before the Mets' scheduled game against the Nationals on Sunday, as has been his practice since Sept. 13.
Wright, 35, last played in a big-league game on May 27, 2016. He is hanging up his cleats for medical reasons at the end of the season because of back, neck and shoulder injuries.
