Metros suspended in Sunderland between East Boldon and South Hylton after train damaged

Metro trains have been halted throughout Sunderland after a train suffered damage on the line.

Services were originally suspended between South Hylton and Park Lane just before 12pm on Sunday.

This was caused by damage to a train's pantograph, the device on the train which is connected to the overhead wire.

Due to the damage, the train was unable to run and may have to be moved from the line.

At around 12.30pm, the service suspension was extended between South Hylton and East Boldon.

Passengers are able to use their tickets on Stagecoach buses 10, 11 and 20 and on Go North East services 9, 20 and 56.

There are also four Metro replacement buses running in the affected area under the number 900.

At the moment there is no estimated time for when trains will be able to run again.

As well as the disruption on Wearside, there are no trains running between Benton and Monkseaton stations in North Tyneside.

This is due to planned engineering works taking place during the weekend and replacement buses have been arranged.
